Armistice Day
He said he'd had enough. I distinctly remember him saying that as he dropped his rifle and went over the trench. "That's fucking enough", he said. But he didn't charge. He just sat down on the battlefield and looked bemused. There was a small smirk on his face as he settled in to die. We all waited for the shot, but it didn't come. Hell, we stopped firing just to see what the crazy bastard did next. Eventually, he opened his eyes. I was no further from him than you are from me, and I heard him say, "Ha! That's unexpected." Then the speech we all heard. "So hows about y'all try getting along instead? I mean, it can't hurt. You can always go back to killing each other when it doesn't work out."
